A PORTABLE WATER PROJECT IN THE ECUADORIAN AMAZON RAIN FOREST

In the small community of Santa Ana, Ecuador, the indigenous language, culture and traditions are still very strong;

most families continue to live off of fishing and their chakras, a form of traditional sustainable agriculture. They used get their water from rain barrels or nearby streams, sources are both unreliable and unsafe. After years of community effort and collaboration with a group of MIT students, Santa Ana now has a functional community water system.

In January 2009, the Santa Ana water board installed family rain water systems at all the houses in one neighboring community, La Encañada, and is now helping two other communities to do the same.

~~ART FOR WATER~~

Sacha Yaku was founded as an organization to purchase the amazing traditional ceramics and jewelry made in this community at fair trade prices and sell it in the United States to generate income for the women and sustainable source of funding for the water system.
